This book is charming (as you would hope from the English village setting), smart, witty, subtle, and sly. It states many truths about small towns (even still today) and about people and how strengths and weakness exist simultaneously. You'll enjoy the women (and very few men) of Cranford. ...more

Pleasant read on audio. I am not a huge Gaskell fan, but I appreciate what she brought to English literature during a time when it male-dominated.

Cozy and Jane-Austeny. There's a leeetle bit of plot in the last third of the book, but mostly it's just vignettes. I enjoyed it for bedtime reading. ...more

I found it quite boring at first but then I grew to like it better. It took me some time to appreciate the gentle humor.
