This book turned me off somewhat with the periodic bits of meandering "poetic" prose. However, I eventually found myself longing to cook traditional Tuscan cuisine despite the fact I don't eat furry animals and am allergic to nuts...I like that Mayes focused so much on the planning, preperation, and creation of meals -- clearly capturing how rural Western Europe's abundant fresh produce motivates even culinary novices to experiment in the kitchen. I really wanted to love this book, and did love parts of it... but I did find myself skimming a lot. Perhaps, more for the reader who reads for the beauty of language, and not for story?
I was disappointed by this book. It got boring after a while. Maybe if you are interested in the details of renovating a house in Tuscany it would be more interesting. I think it would have made a good essay,too long for the information presented.
A middle-aged woman follows her bliss & buys a home in Tuscany. She commutes on breaks from her teach job to renovat the farmhouse. Just not that interested in all the home improvements.
