I found this book to be completely underwhelming. I understand that it's popular among Victorian lit fans, but I'm not sure that I understand why. Although some found the ending to be abrupt, I actually liked how everything turned out. The outcome of the book actually turned it from a 2 star to a 3 star read for me.

I am bound to say it might have been made much more truly impressive, if there had been less French, Rousseau-like sentimentalizing and wire-drawing; and rather more healthful carelessness of effect.
I can’t disagree!
At its heart, I suppose this is one of the first enemies-to-lovers romances.

This is the rare book where the plot made me roll my eyes but I still loved every word. If you ever want the definition of being friend-zoned, read this book. Part of my problem was that the love interest was described in such a way that I was reminded of 2 people I work with, both of whom are not interested at all in any romantic engagement with women, before I realized he was actually supposed to be a love interest. Uhh I don't know something about this book made me think I was in the state of coma... reading it just happened, didn't engage me at all. I was reading it for my book club, otherwise I don't think I would have finished it. None of the characters were likeable, the story was not compelling, and although I enjoyed the interludes in French I didn't think it added to the richness of the story having parts of it in French.
