This novel explores one of the characters we were introduced to in previous novels and his family is not pretty. It’s a good whodunnit in French’s fun and intriguing style which is set in Dublin, Ireland. His life and family are bleak and sad and desperate. No spoilers here but definitely worth reading. I prefer my characters to more female driven but this one is all about Frank.

French's novels always start out four- or even five-star for me. She is a lyrical writer, and Irishness of her work is thoroughly beautiful.

A deep dive into a troubled man--a police officer in Dublin--dealing with family dysfunction and dysfunction from "the old neighborhood". I was a little disappointed how the mystery panned out, but the characters and setting were really the fine cheese of the book, with the crime story being but the Triscuit upon which they were served.
