This is the first book in a trilogy. At e heart of this action adventure is the Ibis, a ship voyaging across the Indian Ocean before the Opium Wars in China. It iis a time of colonial upheaval, in which the Bengalis lose much of their freedoms. The caste system plays a role in that it becomes different as the cast become 'ship-brothers'. This is literature at its best, giving the reader a wonderful read and much new information on that time and place.
