Shelves: crime-mystery, historical, 1970-1999, novels, religion, _europe-southern

I like historical mysteries and find the history of religion and monasteries fascinating, but those two felt separate in this one. The endless philosophical discussions and lists of architectural details and so on made me doze every once in a while, and finally I started skimming them to only get to the actual storyline. Really, substance in historical mysteries is a great thing, but it has to be executed well or it takes a lot away from the story. Which in this case was quite interesting, I was ...more

This book is so full of historical/religious facts and stories I almost forgot that it also has mysteries (and one of the main reasons why I actually read this book). It's so solid and compact, and if this book is a cake, I had felt really full before I read half of it.

Luckily, the narrator, Adso, a young novice who became the assistant of Brother William (the main protagonist), is very easy to be liked. I also love William - the character who reminded me a lot of Sherlock Holmes.
