Shelves: historical-fiction

3.5 stars. An engaging enough adventure with an interesting puzzle/mystery. The book just seemed a tad too long and there was too much foreshadowing - one of those instances when the mystery is revealed and you think, okay (but that's it). It was fun traveling between the two time periods and 'meeting' some famous people such as Marat, Charlotte Corday, Napolean, Louis XVI, Benedict Arnold, etc. And the globetrotting was interesting too. The plot was compelling, but like so many books of its kind (Twilight comes to mind) the writing just didn't do it for me. Too many of the trite conventions 'If I had only known that that choice would haunt me FOREVER' type stuff.

I DID like the story. And I'm glad I read it. Just not on the top of my list of all time faves. ...more
