For me this book was about conforming to social norms and how we act and feel in our day to day lives to fit into what society prescribes. Veronika, a librarian (an awesome job I would imagine!), decides to commit suicide but luckily fails and ends up in an institution for the mentally ill. As she is 'treated' by the hospital's head physician she encounters other patients who are all looking for, but seldom finding, their place in the world.

Trigger Warnings: Suicide, Substance Abuse, Mental Illness

If I may be a touch personal in this review, I almost didn't read this book because of it's title. But this book by esteemed author Coelho has been on my shelf for ages and has that low page count I was after to help me complete my #MountTBR challenge, so I picked it up. After all, sometimes you have to read things you're uncomfortable with to be exposed to other views.

I've lost interest in this. I stopped on page 152, skipped to the end, and am glad I'm not going to finish it. Either I don't have the patience right now or it's just tedious. I liked picturing the setting (Ljubljana is a beautiful city) but I didn't care about the characters. What is crazy? I don't even care. ...more
