3.5 stars really. This is the third book I have read by Kadare, and although this isn't my favorite by him, I did enjoy it.

This is a strangely beautiful book with a rather dreamy quality to the writing. It is filled with folklore and unusual characters and has a Kafka-esque quality to it that I found entirely appropriate. Set in a remote mountain village at the end of a dictatorial regime, the people of the village are constantly on guard, afraid to trust in their new freedom.
