Mexican Gothic is considered a modern day gothic horror novel. The story's central character is Noemi, a beautiful and wealthy young woman who goes to visit her newly married cousin, Catalina. Catalina asks for Noemi's help in protecting Catalina from her husband, Virgil, whom she believes is trying to poison her. Noemi's visit with her cousin leads her to unravel a strange mystery among Virgil's family and its connection to the house in which they live.

This rating may be more about me than the book...I haven't been truly frightened or horrified by a book since Stephen King's novel, Pet Sematary. Beautiful, dark, creepy but with a uniquely romantic sensibility. Unlike anything I’ve ever read. Some of the gross parts were disturbing and pretty icky but the strong story and compelling characters made it worthwhile. Really good, can’t wait to read more by this author!

I put off reading this because its labeled as horror. I don't think I would define it as such. Its a great Gothic mystery full of twist and turns and I really liked it. ...more
