Ok, I get that working backwards from 1947 to 1944 to 1940 is a different and interesting narrative device. Really. And I get that I've been reading formulaic crap for months and that if/when I start reading stuff that actually challenges my mind again I'll have to embrace interesting narrative devices. That said, the structure didn't completely work for me. At the end of the first section, I wanted to know about the future for the four central characters, not the past. Maybe I should try readin

Waters is undeniably a brilliant writer - she has an incredible ability to cut right to the heart of how people relate to each other, and she does it in the most beautiful prose. One of my favorite authors.
