What Members Thought

What a great book! It's an interesting magical realism story about the intersection of 5 people, who each have a name that matches one of the 5 Chinese virtues, and a weretiger that may be stalking the residents of a small town in colonized Malaya. There are many layers to both the story and the characters that held my interest throughout. I felt so so about the ending, but not enough to tarnish my overall reading experience.

I loved this one! So carefully planned and thought out. Elements of superstition, historical interest and set in Malaysia (checks another country off my list!). The characters were interesting and had you rooting for them, despite the fact that there were a lot of primary characters to keep track of. The writing was beautiful and created vivid images that are staying with me even after I finished reading the book. Recommended.

1930's Malaya, weretigers, missing pathology specimens, the ex-pat lifestyle, and local myths and legends. Possibly a childhood in Malaya made this more interesting, I really enjoyed the local references and language. I'll be checking out this author's earlier book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm not usually a fan of magical realism, but the author expertly wove those into the story.
