Tragic story of an African American family living in Louisiana. The book follows the life of the family over a period time that included flashbacks to the deaths of two important characters who both continue to impact the family in present day. Ward's writing is beautiful. Listening to this book on audio was highly rewarding. I really liked this book. My book club was a little confused by it, but we had a good discussion about family, race, and relationships. Ward is a talented writer and her characterizations made me feel a lot of empathy for the characters, even those who repeatedly made horrible decisions that hurt the people in their lives.
