Interesting story set during the English Civil War. Being such a foodie and cook, I thought I would have enjoyed the kitchen and cooking themes a bit more than I actually did. I honestly got bored by most of the food descriptions and was never truly sold on the whole "prepare a magical feast" premise of the story. ...more

So much of the novel depended upon the mythical story of the feast. I found much of the background confusing and the many parts of the novel were simply unclear. I don't feel that some aspects of the story seem to weave into a unified personality of a single novel. Reading through to understand the lovely tales of the feast, I would find that evil characters would make startling appearances, such as that of the religious zealot character. I'm a seasoned reader of fiction, but I leave this novel ...more
