My only regret in reading this wonderful, witty book about pre-teen detective Flavia De Luce is that I have not read any of these until I received this one as a giveaway. Flavia is a great character, roaming the countryside on her trusty bicycle Gladys and observing her world through the eyes of a budding chemist and Sherlock Holmes. One of several children growing up without a mother, Flavia is just returning from a sojourn to Canada, and is surprised to not be met at the station by her family. ...more

If any of these Flavia books catch your eye, read the first one. I enjoyed this book because I already like the characters. References to previous books helped keep it interesting as a piece of a bigger story but what about the reader who hasn't read the others? The first book had so many real things, people, events woven into the fiction that it was a marvel. The family dynamics made the story rich and fun. In this installment the mystery is sort of solved but then questions are brought up that ...more

Always, always love Flavia's story. I don't think I've read one that did not satisfy me. Although the mystery element of the latter books are still good, actually the main attraction for me is the de Luce family!! Their relationships, past mysteries, sorrows, happiness - I can't help to care more and more about Flavia and her family. I also love how Alan Bradley gave some vague conclusions of the mystery in this book, because "in real life, we can't always have all of the answers" :)

But.. I have

Another amazing entry in the Flavia de Luce series! Flavia has returned from her 'exile' in Canada, and has to deal with her father's pneumonia, her sisters' continued flakiness, her cousin's weirdness, and of course, another dead body. Flavia perseveres in weaving her way through the tangled threads, as only she can, using her knowledge of chemistry and of human nature to help her figure things out. Of course, as with some of the earlier books in this series, there is a cliff-hanger at the end, ...more

If you are looking for meticulously constructed plots, this series is not for you. But Flavia DeLuce, 12 year old chemistry prodigy and budding detective, is charming as ever. The family dynamics and Flavia's clever but naive antics are the best part of the stories. Definitely start this series from the beginning though. Reading them out of order would spoil the effect. ...more

3.5 stars. I'm so glad Flavia is back, and back at Buckshaw. But I am curious about the whole secret society thing from the previous book. When will we learn more about that? ...more
