Count Alexander Rostov is a Russian aristocrat who is put on house arrest in 1922. He serves his sentence in one of the most luxurious hotels in Moscow. A cast of characters comes and goes throughout the decades Rostov spends in the hotel as he adapts to his new life.
This book was a long, slow read, but by the end I really enjoyed it. There are moments of humor and a lot of philosophical musings. I like the way Towles writes. It somehow feels very authentic to time and place.

Everything historical fiction should be and more. Alexander is a lovable, compelling, funny, and charming character. There were so many emotional moments that I was brought to tears more than once. There was literary depth to the writing. I feel like I learned a great deal about Russia during the revolution.
