I like the method in which Kij Johson adapted a well known Japanese fable into a novel, but I had a difficult time feeling any empathy for the cmain character. I suspect that was not really the point of the novel though.
I did find that I was more interetsed in the stories and point of view of the side characters than I was the main plotline, especially those of the brother, Josei and Kaya no Yoshifuji's wife.
Overall though it was a joy to read and I would like to read more from Kij Johnson. ...more
