This was a REALLY long book, and I am really glad that I am finally done with it. It wasn't a bad book, but no book needs to be THIS long. The last 20% of the book was fantastic, a five star read. The rest of the book dragged.

Ultimately, I enjoyed this book--it has a great historical-fantasy balance and some good, wry humor in the narrative. I believed in the world that Clarke created (I even had some bad dreams about the gentleman with the thistle-down hair). However, it should be about, oh, 200 pages shorter.
Really a lovely book. It was rather slow at the beginning, I have to admit; for the first hundred pages I wasn't sure if I was going to like the book. However, the book sped up considerably, and really became a very interesting and beautiful book. Clarke creates a beautiful and intricate world which I would like to see more of.
