Sad and troubling book about a highly intelligent young man, Robert Peace, who attends Yale and then becomes unable to get his life on track post-graduation. Peace's life history makes for interesting reading, but I struggled with how much of the book was accurate. The author was Peace's former roommate but had no relationship with Peace before then and very little after. This book underscores that brains and work ethic are not always enough to buoy someone to success; if one were to look at his accolades on paper, it would be difficult (if not impossible) to reconcile his adult life with the promise he showed as a child and teen. The force of background (not the right word, but my word retrieval is TERRIBLE these days) ensnares so many, and even STILL we don't give enough credence to this force of influence.
