This was the first book chosen for my new book group -- so I will add more once we have a chance to meet in two weeks. This was also my first Octavia Butler book, which makes the score higher since partly I am just so thrilled to have read anything of hers. The story itself is fascinating, a post-apocalyptic Lord of the Flies situation, with a strong young heroine with the devastating special ability of feeling the pain of those around her. While I recommend reading this book, I should NOT have read it at this moment: it is set in the years 2026-27, and the US is a failed state. All police are corrupt; there is a new street drug, pyro, that makes arson better than sex, there are walls around every small community and the druggies and rapists and poor scrabble over them to take whatever they can find. There's something eerie about reading a dystopia set this year and it being so prescient because it's too close to reality for comfort.
The lead is a young adult who is charismatic enough to lead people, sometimes decades older than her, into joining her cult of creating a commune. She makes good points. ...more
