I enjoyed this book very much. Charming in its delivery, Finney's message is an important one and still relevant today. Progress is good, but as a people, we have done much in the world to cause great harm. From polluting our planet to bombing our enemies, we have changed the world by making it a scary place to live. A classic of the time travel genre. The lyrical evocation of gilded age New York is a bonus for those with a keen interest in that era. Add a dose of romance, and you've got an irresistible combination. I've read this one several times and enjoyed it each time.

This is about a man who is engaged by the government to attempt to travel to a very specific part of the past -- New York City in 1882.
There were a few things that I was quite frustrated with: the flimsy romance(s), the rejection of modernity, the weak premise of the investigation the man is engaged for. Most of all, though, what I find most annoying was Simon ('Si') Morley himself. He reminded me of Pip of Great Expectations, another first-person narrator who is in my opinion spineless.
