What a wonderful book! Chang does a great job of weaving in Leiyin's story against a backdrop of change and turmoil in China during the 1930s-1950s. Leiyin is dead at the start of the novel, and she is with 3 souls who help her look back at her life and the choices that she made. Leiyin needs to figure how to right some of the wrongs that she had committed before she can go into the afterlife. Chang touches on feminism, education, classism, political theology and retribution.
