Very dark, albeit romantic suspense, of a sort.
Jamaica Inn sounds like an interesting place, perhaps even welcoming. But I wouldn't want to go there now that I know what it is like.
Our main character, Mary, goes there to live with her Aunt Patience, but finds her in a desperately unhappy situation. Mary has a desire to help her aunt out of the terror and so has to subject herself to it for a time.

Not only is it Daphne Du Maurier Reading Week, but I am actively reading through her “backlist”–I supposed that isn’t really the correct term since she’s dead, but it’s the same principle. I’m trying to read through all of her books and story collections. So, this week I’m able to cross another one off the list.

A wild ride of a read. Echoes of Wuthering Heights from the beginning, with the evocative descriptions of untamed nature and with the savage violence of sexual threat, sexual abasement, drunkenness and murder. Du Maurier sets her tale in the past as well, in the early nineteenth century, but she has the sensibility of a woman from the 1930s.
