This is the first Guy Gavriel Kay book I've read, and I enjoyed it very much. It has a pretty standard Swords-and-Horses setting with a nicely subtle system of magic. It's a character-driven story, with flawed heroes and multi-faceted villains.

Usually you can give me a set of likable, oppressed rebels, and you can pretty much automatically sign me up for the revolution. The kinds of heroes who fight for freedom in these stories were always celebrated in my home, in the kinds of media my family was excited about.
