For all my complaints about this trilogy, it speaks volumes that I read all three fat paperbacks in less than two weeks. The narrative is riveting, even in this last book which has long sections where people are mostly walking. Not all of the characterizations were successful, but I don't often feel as much of a connection with a protagonist as I did to Fitz.

I was more or less obsessed by this series for two weeks, and as I finished it all I could say was wow.
The writing (particularly her characterization) is excellent. Unlike much epic fantasy, there's a vague feeling of discord at the end because most of our main characters don't live happily ever after. The final book in the trilogy outshines both of its very strong predecessors. The two complaints I have about the series are that, first, the 'villians' are far too two-dimensional (while the heroes are anything but). Secondly, Fitz is conveniently stupid sometimes when it is absolutely obvious what is going to happen. With that said, the characterization in the book is excellent--the relationships between Fitz and Burrich, Fitz and Nighteyes, Fitz and Kettricken, Fitz and Verity (I could go on)

Third in the trilogy and the longest. I was annoyed that the cover didn't reflect how many times poor Fitz had had the crap beaten out of him in his short lifetime. It turned out he wasn't writing the account from a viewpoint of old age, just 6 years later - plenty of room for the second trilogy. It dragged a little but the scary dragons finally did show up. i love this series!! i was only a tad bit disappointed that she didn't explain too much more about the old blood... but i started reading the next set of books with fitz (the tawny man trilogy) and see that she left that open for a reason - more books! =] loved it.
