Ok so I guess it looks like I have joined the Dresden Files a little late considering the number of books and short stories and even graphic novels there are out there but I guess having seen the TV series (which sadly was cancelled but I can see sort of didnt really fit well with the books anyway) and I was able to buy the first six books as a box set - meant that they sat on my shelf and missed out as other newer books grabbed my attention and demanded to be read (another one is the Weather Wa

Harry is great. I love his sense of humor. Can't wait to read the next book.

I'm very familiar with The Dresden Files, having seen episodes of the series on the SciFi Network; read some of the graphic novels; and read short stories of the series in various anthologies, but I'd yet to read the actual book series. And while I've been fortunate to receive a LOT of Advance Reader's Copy of new books from many publishers, this particular title has been around for a few years, so scoring a 'free' copy ...more

The Dresden files has become one of my favorite fantasy series and by far my favorite urban fantasy series. It combines noir detective stories and the wizard story and puts it all in a world that feels like it won't fall apart if you look to carefully. (It might fall apart if the villains get their way but that's a different point.)

Fun to go back and check on the first of what has become a massive urban fiction/fantasy/noir series (now at 15 books?). Harry Dresden fumbles his way through investigations, getting seduced, betrayed and attacked by one monster/dame/vampire after another. When things can't seem to get worse, they always do. Harry perseveres through a combination of luck, toughness and street-savvy.

I really enjoyed this one. Quick read because it kept you wanting to turn the pages.
How do you tackle finding a villain that strikes from afar leaving no clues or evidence of how he committed his crime. This is the dilemma that Harry has in his role as consultant for the Chicago police dept. Throw in vampires, sorcery and organized crime and this provides Harry with a very bad time.

Fun & entertaining quick read.
Not high end, but still enjoyable all the same. I liked it enough to add the next book in the series to my to be read list.
I would put it in the same category as a few other series I have read, Rachael Morgan & sookie stackhouse come to mind as far as the type of book. Sort of dry dark sense of humor & kind of out there sense of distorted reality.
Just a fun escapism type of book.
