I've read over a half dozen of Patterson's Alex Cross novels, and of those I've read this first one is the best. A lot of the reason I kept reading after this one is the protagonist detective, Alex Cross. He's likable and relatable here. He's a black detective and psychologist in Washington DC. One who doesn't want to leave the old neighborhood and raising two young children with his grandmother having lost his wife. 3.5 stars It took me a bit to get started. I kept wandering away from the book. But once I was hooked I read it in one sitting.

Shelves: crime-mystery-thriller

Really liked this book. I got very concerned when the real action seemed done halfway through, but I didn't really see the neurosis of Gary Murphy coming. Certainly a great effort by Patterson, and one I recommend to anyone looking for a quick thrill read. ...more
