This is the first book in J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. My sister had been telling me for over a year that I absolutely HAD to read them. I always found other books that seemed to be more important—and I could kick myself in the ass for waiting so long to start them. This series is absolutely mind-pleasing, action packed, and full of romance and love.

Book 1, “Dark Lover”, introduces us to the Brotherhood, with the main focus being on Wrath. He is the last vampire with a pure bloodline. When his brother, Darius, comes to him about his daughter and her ½ vamp bloodline and asks Wrath to protect her he refuses….until respect and duty ultimately win and he finds himself unable to stay away from Beth.

Beth, on the other and, doesn’t understand why the tall dark stranger, that wears sunglasses all the time, won’t leave her alone. She’s drawn to him even though she senses his aura of dangerousness. She unintentionally involves Butch, a local cop, which is a whole different story…literally.

All throughout the story, the vampires also deal with their hunters, the Lessers--baby powder fresh and willing to die for the Omega’s cause. It’s important to keep the civilian vampires safe and to do that takes the Brotherhood into dangerous situations and continuously risking their lives.

I was hooked by the end of the first chapter—probably more like the middle of the first page….

I loved this book and can't wait to read the next of the series. This is the first book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
This is the story of Wrath, the king, last pure-blood vamps. He is harden by life and cares for no one, except the brotherhood and killing the lessers. I can't believe I held out so long on reading this series! I started this book to appease a few of my friends, that just so happen to be die hard BDB fans. What went from two chapters quickly lead to me turning the page in anticipation to see what was going to happen next. Darious, one of the Brotherhood, asks Wrath to help his daughter Beth in her transition. Wrath refuses, but then something happens to Darius and Wrath goes to Beth. Once he sees her and gives into some hot loving, he knows the I can't believe I held out so long on reading this series! Seriously, you can’t go wrong with one hot, tall, sexy vampire in leather and so much alpha. Beth, you couldn't help but admire. As far as leading ladies go, she is beautiful, takes no shit and has a loving side even though her growing up was spent in the system. All of the brothers have you craving more of them since you get a peek at all of their personalities. I admit to sneaking a peek at the next book “Lover Eternal” and wanted to jump right into “Rhage“. There are bad ass, hot vampires, romance, and some intenseness in “Dark Lover” that keeps your nose in the book. I originally started this book because the BDB fans, who are my friends, made me feel I was committing a sin for not reading them sooner. I see now they were right as it quickly turned into my for “fun book” as a break from reviewing. I am officially now a BDB girl, who longs for my next fix into the world of the Brotherhood. There are some words you might not or won’t understand, but thankfully J.R. has included a glossary to help. So, while some of you may get frustrated about having to take a break and flip back to look to the glossary, don’t be, it’s well worth it. J.R. Ward is a wonderful, talented, and unique writer. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone else living in sin like I was prior to this review. Save your immortal soul and check them out!

WOW - great way to start a series. Usually series in the first book get bogged down in too many details or don't do a very good job of setting up the series. This book did a great job of setting up a new mythology, introducing interesting characters and was a good story within itself. It also did not end in a cliff hanger - I loved that! It could of used a bit more humor and I felt that the characters could easily have embraced that. Rather than that - very good read. ...more

Wow, it was passionate, exciting and just down right fun. Wrath is one hot Vampire and Beth is his perfect match. Loved this book! Its the best book in the series as far as I am concerned.
