July 18-21, 2011 listen: this time around it really struck me how similar Miles' modus operandi regarding authority, getting things done, and working around realities really comes from Cordelia. Don't know why I didn't see that before. Is it just because we're looking at events from Cordelia's perspective? No, I don't think so. I can see Aral looking at Cordelia and saying something similar to Miles' comment on Ekaterin, like "I love effective [efficient] women" (somehow that's not quite right, ...more

Five years, and six books, into the Vorkosigan Saga, Lois McMaster Bujold went back and filled in a bit more of the history. Shards of Honor was the story of Miles' parents meeting and falling in love. My friend, Jonathan, who has read the entire series, almost talked me into jumping directly into Miles Vorkosigan's story with The Warrior's Apprentice.

After reading Shards of Honor and liking it--but not

What a grand space opera. You could hardly ask for a more thrilling work! Surely Cordelia Vorkosigan is one of the great heroines of SF. Absolutely un-put-downable; don't begin this unless you have several hours to give to it. ...more

If we had a point system I would give this 3.5 stars. Perhaps I should not have read The Warrior's Apprentice and The Vor Game first. Those books talk about what happened early and have dramatic events for Piotr and Bothari. I really enjoyed learning more about Barrayarian culture, the Vors, the early days of Aral's Regency, etc. Both Piotr and Bothari (Miles' grandfather and bodyguard) have depths of character which are explored here. Piotri has a fondness for Cordelia which quickly turns once ...more
