One of the great classic SF novels of all time. Nobody who loves or works in the genre should fail to read this.
My story about CANTICLE happened in 1972, when my family moved to Munich, Germany. My father worked for the US State Department, and we arrived on the 24th of December. Hastily we zoomed to the PX before everything closed down for the holidays, to buy food. A literary triptych considering the tension between faith, science and man.
This is a book striving to not dodge the hard questions, rather it seeks to embrace them. To strive against scientific progress is impossible, and that progress will bring suffering and death on a broader and broader scale.
With that very harsh message comes lovely light moments, particularly in the first story. The humour in Fiat Homo was wonderful, and sadly fell away during the course of the next two stories.
