At times, some of the subplots seem slow, but overall, this book is well done when you consider that it's slated to be the first of a 10-part series. If you think about it that way, then you realize this is like a prologue, which makes the slow pace of a few chapters forgivable. Especially with how amazingly realistic the character interactions are and how epic the tale is. I've read most of his books and think Sanderson is a fantastic writer, so I was shocked when I hated this book. It's so boring, slow paced, and the characters are uninteresting. I stayed with it for 800 pages before trashing this book... that's 2 decent sized novels worth of words but the plot went nowhere in all that time. Actually there was no plot in all that mess. This book really, really could have used a good editor to cut it down to maybe 400-500 pages. I won't be picking up book 2.
