What Members Thought

I thoroughly enjoyed my first foray into Sanderson's writing. I know most folks start with the Mistborn books, but I thought I'd try reading his Cosmere books in chronological order and the list I found suggested I start with this one. This read like good, solid fantasy. There was a decent amount of world building, however, I wish Sanderson swapped out some of the politics for a bit more focus on the magic-building. I enjoy reading Sanderson's books - I definitely wouldn't class them among the scifi-fantasy that crosses over into serious literature, but otherwise I'd say he's a good writer. I find the endings pretty predictable, but at the same time high-tension. Though I'm not absolutely sure since I was very involved in the story at the time, I think I was clenching my ipod in that moment when (view spoiler)

I liked the universe that Sanderson has created in this book, but beyond the interesting premise there wasn't a lot of substance to his writing. The characters were fairly unsophisticated and flat, and the plot fell very much into the good vs. evil vein, with a helping of deus ex machina.
