What Members Thought
Cracking sword'n'sorcery novel with mock European setting. Well worth investing 500 pages in and (frankly) the best of the oeuvre I've read in a long while. I don't know who did it first, but I was reminded of a similar novel ('The Steel Remains' Richard K Morgan) with equally well rounded characters and snappy dialogue.
If you compare it with something a bit more trite ('Orcs' by Stan Nicholls) it's streets ahead.

Muito, muito bom este primeiro livro de Joe Abercrombie. Personagens fora do comum e bem construídas, enredo interessante e não linear, história cativante e coerente.
O que mais retenho deste livro são as descrições bastante detalhadas de lutas e confrontos, que raramente se encontram noutros livros. Muito bom mesmo! Fez-me pegar no volume #2 da saga mal acabei de o pousar. Recomenda-se aos fãs de fantasia épica com algum estômago para aguentar as partes mais gore :) ...more

Clearly a first novel since it's full of little issues and some bad editing, but it improves as it goes along, and I know from reading Best Served Cold that the author did indeed get better. I give it three and a half stars, though this site sadly doesn't give that option.
