I wish I could have liked the book in order to give the book a higher rating, especially when Michael J. Sullivan is probably the author that I know that interacts the most on Goodreads, but the book had too many tropes. I read the book because Michael really wanted everyone to read the book, and told him I would check it out. Before I read the book, I thought the book was on the level like all others writing in fantasy, without any tropes, trying to be different. Then I read the extra that the

Well, that was fun! Sullivan uses some tried-and-true epic fantasy tropes, but manages to knock them askew in ways that keep the reader riveted. I liked the adventure of the story as well as the background details of his world's history. His characters had distinction without distraction. Quality stuff all around. When I started reading this, I kept thinking to myself, this is good-ish. But the story was moving a bit fast, details remained scanty, the characters a little one dimensional. It was all just a little pat. And I kept thinking that I should finish it quick to get back to Gentlemen Bastards Book 3. However the more I read, the more I couldn't stop. And I still can't tell you why I ended up enjoying it so much. It's not excellent. It's good. But it is very enjoyable. And I've ended up buying the n

4.5 stars! (NB: this review is for the audiobook.) This book, (well, these two books, since it's the first two books of the series combined), hit all the right notes for me. Compelling characters, a fast-paced and engaging plot, and just enough worldbuilding to immerse me in the story without overwhelming me with infodumps.
