What Members Thought

Finished on Sep 28th, 2016:

There are 5 chapters/sections in this book and the first four were really creepy and thrilling. The last section was a complete letdown - nothing made sense and I could not understand what was happening. It was written that way so that more things can be revealed in the next part of this novel. But because of this, I was not impressed as the suspense keeps building in the book and then nothing is revealed to you except for some elaborate descriptions whi ...more

Jeff Vandermeer has always specialized in "weird," often stories centering on fantasy cities and/or steampunk. He's a chameleon who can shift into whatever genre he slips into.
And yet, I was still mildly surprised when I heard that he was writing a trilogy of science fiction books. Sci-fi has less scope for the weird. But Vandermeer brings his own darkly fantastical touch to "Annihilation," the first novel of the Southern Reach Trilogy -- it's a sort of a cross between Arthur C. Clarke and H.P. ...more

Meh. I know this is part one of a trilogy, but there is very little actual action in the story and a ton of expository writing that actually never manages to hit home with the reader. In contrast to Cormac McCarthy, VanderMeer's focus on feeling, environment, and emotion comes up short ultimately.
I really didn't care what happened to the characters. And we never even approach answers for the big questions in the book. Which granted, may be the point, but it's just not something I care for. I'm ...more

An easy short read which had me exclaiming in fright several times. Had a good emotional payoff too, but the mystery of Area X is frustratingly unsolved so I look forward to the sequels.

Not just weird. Super weird. I have only the vaguest idea of what just happened. But I really don't care. I liked it.

Meh. Not my cup of tea.
It was an interesting concept, but I found myself longing to get to the end. I didn't much care for the MC and the flashbacks and navel gazing irritated and bored me. I am not going to pursue the rest of the trilogy. ...more
