"Epic horror" isn't something you hear of very often, unlike "epic fantasy" or "historical epic." Horror tends to be small and intimate.
But Justin Cronin seems to have created a very epic horror story in "The Passage," the first book of a trilogy that seems to be equal parts Stephen King and "The Road" -- a gloriously bleak, imaginative book. Its only problem is that at times, Cronin's story drags a bit.

A page turner & IMHO sort of like Dan Brown & Stephenie Meyer's stuff in the sense that it's an incredibly entertaining read as long as you don't think too hard about it (like unfortunate implications & stuff). The pacing & action are quite good & IMO it could be made into a nice movie.
p.s. it is said that Cronin got the idea b/c his daughter want a story in which a girl saves the world & the bad guys are vampires. ...more

3.5 stars. It was too long and too focused on setting up a series. Liked some of the characters, but a lot seemed underdeveloped. I will probably read the next two though.

The first 300 pages were great! I thought we were looking at another "The Stand" type book. Stop reading there, though, the next 500 pages are boring and worthless. I will not be reading the sequel.
