Maybe I'm just not that interested in the band-of-mercenary-men-fighting-a-war thing or maybe it was the writing style that just didn't do it for me, but I found it really difficult to get into this book.

This is another book suggested for a monthly read by a fantasy group. Having not read any of Mr. Cooks novels beforehand, and reading somewhere that this author was influential in a few of today’s modern epic fantasy authors, I decided to crack this cover open.

This one wasn't for me.
I don't even know exactly why - I just didn't get sucked into the story.
It was an ok read, but I didn't really care about any of the characters.
The story somehow jumped around in my eyes. It wasn't really one continuous story line, but something here, something there, something somewhere.
The problem was not at all that it's quite dark - I loved the night angel series for example - but somehow it just stayed completely unemotional for me. I think if the whole Black company ...more
