I have read condensed versions of this book when my children were younger. However, reading Doyle's version was wonderful. The descriptions of the moor helped to create a mood of horror. The loneliness of the land, the dreariness of the stormy weather as well as Baskerville's house, the eerie and haunting howling of a hound all foreshadow horrifying events.

I enjoy this book because we get to know Dr. Watson better. Sherlock Holmes leaves him alone with Henry Baskerville. We see much of the event

I am not a big fan of mysteries or detective novels. I have no real explanation for why but every time I have tried in the past I have found myself rather frustrated. Part of it is because often the detective is telling how he figured it out instead of showing. I prefer to have the opportunity to observe the action rather than read a character explain it through dialogue. I also just really hate how so many "detective" novels (I am looking at you Raymond Chandler) are so extremely sexist. So it ...more
