Am terminat această carte de doar câteva ore și nici nu știu cu ce să încep în prezentarea ei. După lectura unui alt roman de aceeași scriitoare (Verișoara mea, Rachel), am rămas curioasă să citesc și alte cărți scrise de Daphne de Maurier. Ambele mi-au plăcut enorm, dar Rebecca m-a cucerit iremediabil.

Honestly, I can’t believe I had never heard of this novel before. It is exactly what I look for for my October Reads challenges. (Which is why I marked it as such even if I didn’t read it in October.) It was actually through a recommendation by a friend that I had heard of this. I purchased it post haste at BN in town as well.

I didn’t see this story as very romantic. In my mind, romance is more what is described in all those “smut” books and fanfics I read. I didn’t see this story as very romantic. In my mind, romance is more what is described in all those “smut” books and fanfics I read. It was a really good story though, even if it is considered a classic. I have troubles with classic literature (with understanding what the storylines are about and struggling through all the prose and such). I didn’t have too much trouble reading this book though. True it was written in a very sophisticated way—nothing at all like the escapist novels, which are published today (even if I also adore those books!). I was surprised by how readable this novel was which overall makes it even more enjoyable for me personally.

The twists and turns did surprise me and was not at all what I was expecting. I liked the characters as well; they seemed to be plucked out of the era—1930s—with Maxim’s sister, Beatrice as being the most prominent character with her time relevant jargon and phrases. (Which could be helpful for me with HTD…)

I did like the narrator; I liked her character of shyness, social awkwardness, and the low sense of self. It was very easy to relate to her (even if some reviewers said she was too passive… pish). I do dislike the truly evil characters of Rebecca and Mrs Danvers. They were very cruel and they seemed to have something very wrong with them—mentally and emotionally. In all the stories of Rebecca’s true character, she seemed like a very disturbed and possessed individual. Not at all someone with whom I would like to meet. I’m actually kind of glad the narrator never got a chance to meet her in person.

While I did like the story very much, I’m not sure if the plotline is one of my favorites. But all storylines can’t be my favorites and it was a wonderful story nevertheless even with all its twists and unexpected turns. And can we talk about that ending?! The last chapter ended like all her other ones did, with a sense of suspense and a slight feeling of a cliffhanger (without it actually being a cliffhanger…).

Rating: 4.5/5.0—In summation, I enjoyed this story very much. It was written in a very well manner and stands up as a good piece of artwork. Personally, I wouldn’t consider it a romance: Maxim and the narrator didn’t seem very connected with each other and I didn’t feel they had chemistry together. Plus in my mind, I have a preconceived notion of a romance novel/book as similar to all of those Harlequin or other romantic stories I have been reading lately (in addition to fanfics, of course). ...more
