What Members Thought

I have kind of mixed feelings towards this book. I spent the vast majority enjoying the hell out of Professor Aronnax and Captain Nemo's adventures... but I can't say I was as fussed at the end. You know the bit at the end. That part. Yeah.
Having said all that, Captain Nemo has shot onto my list of 'favourite fictional characters ever'. He's amazing. He's kind-of-the-villain-but-not-quite, and he's just really interesting to me.
The other characters were kind of iffy, though. Conseil weirded me ...more

This was a fun book! To me it has more value than just being the gran daddy of science fiction. I enjoyed the story, and I enjoyed the mystery of trying to figure out who this deep character Nemo was and where he came from. I know other people who read the book get quite bored of the taxonomic description of all the plants and animals, but I didn’t, I thought it was fun.

I really wanted to like Jules Vernes' books. And "A Journey to the Centre of the Earth" was OK...but far from what I expected. Maybe this book, "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" would be better? I hoped it would be. But I found this book even worse.
To me, this book had even less of a plot than "A Journey..." had. And I found myself struggling to get through all the passages with just "listings" of animals/flora. ...more
