I’ve had Flashback sitting in my to-read pile for a long time now, but I kept moving books in front of it. It was a surprisingly fast and easy read, but it missed some of the depth it could have achieved considering its themes. The largest theme is freewill vs. determinism. That’s a pretty meaty topic for such a short book. Religion has been debating this issue for millennia and hasn’t come to a full conclusion. This... is not a good book. We listened to it on Audible as a trip book and while the overall concept - everyone in the world blacks out and has a two minute glimpse of the future - is a great hook. The problem is that that Sawyer isn't a good writer and he tends to take characters down paths that make them either boring or unsympathetic. Add to that long passages of physics discussions regarding the nature of time and the universe and suddenly we have the first book that I have cut off multiple ...more

Great book - (not sure what to think of the upcoming TV series). I learned that you can always change your destiny!

Just not enjoyable. I knew I was in trouble when a group of quantum physicists moments after the precipatory event conclude on the thinnest of evidence (actually hearsay for the most part) that the future was revealed. Skeptical scientists? Not here. Disappointed reader? Definitely.
