Brilliant! I think the world in this book is pure genius. I love reading books that are unique and make my mind whirl. On the surface this book is a murder mystery, but don't hold that against it. There's so much more to this book than just a simple murder mystery. I'm not going to say anything about the story because I think it made it that much cooler that I didn't know about it going into it. Discovering the world as I went along was very exciting. My sf club was disappointed there wasn't more sf in this one, but I thought the change in point of view was adequately fantastical. Two cultures who cannot see each other by convention...and what if you could stand in both? Could you stand in neither? A metaphor for groups that coexist but don't communicate--be it racial, gendered, age, or political boundaries that can be crossed if you overcome the socially made obstacles.
There's a mystery too, but I'm not good at solving those.

It took me awhile to get my head around the setting: two countries that were split apart at some point in time that share the same physical space. People in one country have to "unsee" people from the other country even though they are on the same street. You have to watch out for crossing the countries without proper permission or you will "breach" the magic(?) barrier between the countries...huh?
