Very interesting look at colonialism and nationalism and assimilation through an amoral ministry that experiments with a found Time Machine by kidnapping past people and pairing them with a “bridge” to help them adjust. Our narrator, one such bridge, is an equally amoral young professional who is here for the money and security but also notices that her charge is kinda hot. Did I say professional? That’s her class, not her actions.

Most of the people in my book club enjoyed this. I was one of the odd ones out. I had started it a few months ago, and had put it down, as not very engaging. The bureaucracy involved around time travel was a bit interesting as a choice, I got interested enough to read the wikipedia pages on teh fated arctic trip, and I'm following the bluesky account of the logs of the successful trip of Terror and Erebus. (Successful in that the crew did not all die). The romance did not strike a spark for me. ...more
