What Members Thought

In the first chapter, I really hated the main character. She was so arrogant and unlikable. She was giving a speech, and spent the whole time while she was talking thinking about how amazing she was. And then, she didn't realize that she was done talking and had finished her speech? I mean, how does that even work?
The second chapter was told from a spider's point of view. I love spiders. But I don't like books from the POV of animals, even animals that are intelligent or are evolving like I ima ...more

Real rating: 6/5.
[Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD]
I hate spiders. So I approached this book with unease. But somehow, after a few chapters reading about the intelligent Portia, Bianca, and (later) Fabian, I would always choose them over humanity in Gilgamesh ark ship, whose passengers were the last of human race trying to find somewhere to live. I really want the spiders to win, I really want their planet stays green and "natural", a nice place to inhabit for the spiders, the stomatopods, yeah, even fo ...more

Children of Time is quite an amazing read. Though not perfect it has that underlying feeling of hope that most good literature becomes better for.
The Earth is dying, helped along by the usual suspects, mankind. The solution is to send ships out to find another world where they can begin again. Also, they have the technologies to terraform any planet that holds potential and the suspended animation chambers to enable them to live long enough to reap the reward. However, man being man, there is a ...more

Vacillated between 2 and 3. Settled on 3 because, while dull in execution, the concepts were lots of fun.
Overall disappointing. Writing is workmanlike and dry. No characterization to speak of. Human chapters are dull AF, and I couldn't distinguish one name from another. By the end, I was able to consistently identify the classicist and the crew member who ultimately took the reins responsibly (no spoilers), but otherwise they were completely interchangeable.
