No one did race in SF better than Octavia Butler. It's a damn shame she left this world so early, because I really want to live in a world where she was able to complete this series.

This is the first time I reread this book in decades (and the first time as an audiobook). I'd been hearing people refer to it lately, in terms of our country's current troubles, but it's much bleaker than where our country is right now. There's no explanation for how society has fallen so far apart, although climate change and worsening economy are implied; there is breakdown in social contract, more desperately poor people doing anything to survive, businesses engaging in slavery without fear

This book has a slow burn. For much of it, I debated setting it aside. Only my regard for Octavia Butler's other books and reputation kept me going. In the end, I am glad I stuck with it. It is a meditation on faith, humanity, and the line between morality and survival.
