I picked out this book base on it being nominated for Hugo and Nebula awards; I was actually thinking of a different book, but I quickly realized my mistake, and had zero preconceptions going into this story. I can definitely see why it was up for a Nebula, there is a love of words and imagery, in terms of setting and plot (and probably character as well), times when you can just smell the place that is being described. A book full of heart and cleverness, about the love of stories and why we escape into them. If you like Cornelia Funke's Inkheart, then you owe this book to yourself.

I wanted this book to be as amazing as the cover is beautiful, and parts of it were really good, but my general overall feeling was more ambivalent. The idea of doors to other worlds is cool, but it was just not executed as thoroughly as I would've liked. Sigh. It's not a bad book. I was entertained. It just wasn't amazing.

A girl grows up in an interesting situation and then slowly learns the magical truth of her guardian, her father, and her herself. It was interesting but I found the main character rather unpersuasive; she took a long time to develop agency (for realistic plot reasons, but I was still impatient), the frame didn't make emotional sense, and I had an allergy to love stories. So a good book, but not aimed at me.
