Well, that was quite an experience. I never read anything like this. Instead of writing a complete review let me just wrote what I feel at this moment and came back to add more once I am, um, more coherent.

First reaction: Pretty much speechless now, I found it hard to construct a complete sentence. Holy fudge. Too many feels! This is so violent, yet so rich, and bloody scary, and speaking of blood, this is crazier than whatever graphic violence I read in novels but do they add to the story yes Well, that was quite an experience. This is so violent, yet so rich, and bloody scary, and speaking of blood, this is crazier than whatever graphic violence I read in novels but do they add to the story yes indeed they did though this is not for everyone, no Sirree, I could understand why people DNF it after the first few chapters. And the horror, oh the body horror and the effed up supernatural creatures that will suck your blood and eat your flesh and get into your skull...but the horror was not limited to these fantastical beings, as mere evil men and women and children were also horrifying....but I digress. The world is fantastic. The characters are strong and memorable - sure the number of characters did confuse me at the start but it does not matter at the end. It's a travelogue - something I kinda hate in SFF since not many authors can write like Tolkien - but here it's just too mesmerizing to miss and the magic too. Now I'd also say the book is really sad, bleak, it'll get to you, maybe since I sympathize with Tracker and Leopard so much and then I could not help but got invested you know? I am glad I read this in between other stories - some were brighter -so it helps my emotional digestion haha....Uh what else, oh I need to say this also has some humor in it, the banters were mostly great - Tracker and his mouth were entertaining - the Leopard, Mossi, and the funny buffalo who reminded me of Maximus the horse from Tangled. My biggest letdown of the book was the editing, I mean there could be 100-150 pages cut since there were some repetitions. So yeah, I am totally babbling right now, but hey I got carried away with the narration style so do forgive me. End note: Go read this book! It's flawed but awesome. Bounced hard off the prose. I can see what James was doing I just don't feel like struggling through the dense writing, and the violence to get through the book. ...more
