I don't know exactly what I was expecting but what I got...amazing! Weir did a fantastic job in conveying Mark's fortitude, humour, resourcefulness, and ability to stay calm and function in the face of utter danger. The scenes back on Earth felt real and just as fraught with tension as Mark's Martian experience. I also liked the scenes of his crew mates on Hermes - I kinda wanted a little more of them, actually.
The entire book was just so much fun to read! I hope the film doesn't ruin this book

Thought I would catch up with this book soon to be made into Ridley Scott movie starring Matt Damon.

The author plays a lot with our emotions and creates a number of really tricky situations in a matter of fact way. However, the underlying irreverent humour keeps us sane in the middle of what is essentially a scary story of an astronaut stranded in Mars.

Eagerly waiting for the movie now.

However, it took me awhile to get into since I don't tend to like journal-entry-style books, but once it got going (and we learned more about what was happening back on earth / with his crewmates), I really enjoyed it. Well that was an edge of your seat read if I've ever read one and I don't usually enjoy sci-fi. The character of Mark Watney was the difference between a boring novel about all the science and engineering Mumbo jumbo needed to believably survive getting stranded on Mars, and the enjoyable, suspenseful, often funny novel that it was. As a reader you will hold your breath as another "boring" day on Mars turns into an action packed fight for survival. Does he make it back to Earth or will we watch ...more
