(AUDIOBOOK) Oh my goodness. I laughed, I gasped in shock, I cried, and I thought long and hard about what it means to die with a life well-lived. The narration for this was FABULOUS - it was read by the author and it was perfection. This is a story of immigration, but it's ultimately a story of family, marriage and the bonds that hold us together. I won't forget this one for a long, long time.

While this book is about many things, it’s mostly about family. It took me awhile but I fell in love with this large, dysfunctional Mexican family. This book helps you understand a bit about the immigrant experience for Mexican-Americans and gives us the glimpse of the blurring lines of the border between the two countries. The first half of the book wasn’t the easiest. There were too many characters and the multiple narratives threw me off. But, I powered through.. The second part of the book w

The novel was bookended with a death and another death. The first death was Mama America, Big Angel's mother where the family gathers in San Diego to mourn. The second death is Big Angel's own death. However, his death isn't a significant part of this book. The most significant part of this book is Big Angel's birthday party, which happened the day after Mama America's funeral.

This book starts with a gathering of a large Mexican-American full of colorful characters at the funeral of the family matriarch. The main focus is on her son Big Angel who himself has only little time left to live but has planned one last birthday party to bring everyone together which will now coincentidally occur one day after the funeral of his mother. This is a story about identity, culture, and hope upon imigrating into another country.

Family patriarch Big Angel is dying, having outlived his mother by just a matter of days. But not before his family throws him one last party.
4.5 stars. This novel has a little bit of everything. It's funny, touching, a little bit violent. There's love and loss and sadness. The audiobook was good, but I read the ending, and I think I might have preferred that. ...more
