Overall a pretty good read. I liked the characters and the conflict in the initiation. I liked that it was set in futuristic Chicago. I liked the idea of the factions....but I didn't feel like it was fleshed out enough. I needed more of that why's, more of the how's. The same thing goes for the term Divergent. I'm sure this will be fleshed out eventually but to me it was unsatisfying. There was a time in the book where I felt like I was reading "The Hunger Games" and I almost threw my iPad acros

I really liked this book much more than I expected to.
I enjoyed the world building in the book although I did think the factions were kinda dumb (when I say this I mean the people in the book are dumb for creating this kind of society) because really people can't value one aspect of human behavior over all the others and you can't rule all the behaviors out. Its ridiculous to think that it could happen. The factions are supposed to work in harmony which is why they were created in the first pla ...more

I’ve had this on my TBR for a very long time. I am not a big YA Fantasy reader, but I wanted to compare the book to the movie. The basic premise is set in dystopian Chicago where the world is divided into five factions and 16 year olds much choose which faction that they want. They are then removed from their families and sent off to train in their respective faction. The story centers on Beatrice whose test results are inconclusive. This entire book reminds me of The Hunger Games, Matched, and

I just could not get into this book. I had never read dystopian, unless I did in high school and did not know it then. Not sure if Brave New World or Lord of the Flies is considered dystopian. I don't think back in the 80s, the word "dystopian" was even used. I debated whether to even read this and for a long time did not. I decided to try listening it on audio, but after listening to several chapters, I decided this just wasn't for me.
